Taking screenshots on the iPhone is a given. We may even do it multiple times a day, and it’s very useful when it comes to sharing information with others. I, for example, find myself sending a lot of screenshots helping friends troubleshooting issues on their iPhones. The information you can share with your friends and family becomes endless when you discover how to use this feature. In this article, I will walk you through the process of taking screenshots on all iPhone models.
Here is something that you may need to know before moving on. The process of taking a screenshot with your iPhone can be different, depending on the model iPhone you have. It depends primarily on having a Home button on your iPhone (this applies to the iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, and iPhone SE users) or having an iPhone without a Home button (this applies to the iPhone 12, iPhone 11, and iPhone X models).
Taking a screenshot on an iPhone with a Home button
Taking a screenshot on an iPhone with a Home button is very straightforward, and after a while, it becomes even second nature. You can apply the following steps if you have an iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, or iPhone 5 models.
- Make sure to have the screen that you want to capture without any clutter (think of removing add pop-ups on areas that just happen to contain the valuable information).
- Press both the Power button on the right side and the Home button at the same time. (Sometimes, Siri may get activated. To prevent this from happening, make sure to press both buttons at the exact same time).
- After quickly pressing both buttons, you’ll hear the sound of the camera shutter, and the screen will flash white.
- The shot will slide to the bottom left of your screen and will stay there for a while. If you don’t tap on it, it will disappear from your screen but not entirely from your phone. You can find it back in your Photo app.
- If you tap on the screenshot, you can choose to edit it, delete it (by tapping on the trash icon) or send it as-is to the person you want to share it with.

Taking a screenshot with an iPhone without a Home button

Taking a screenshot of your iPhone in a nutshell
The following steps apply to iPhone X, iPhoneXR, iPhoneXs, iPhone11, and iPhone 12 users
- Remove all the clutter that should not end on the picture.
- Press both the Power button on the right side and the volume-up button on the left side at once.
- The shot will be taken and it will slide to the bottom left of your screen.
- Tap on the shot and make adjustments if necessary.
Do you own an iPhone without a Home button (think of the iPhone 11 or 12, for example), then is the process of capturing your screen slightly different. After all, these iPhone models don’t have a Home button that you can use together with the Power button. In that case, you need to do the following:
- Make sure that the information you want to share is complete and visible.
- Press both the volume-up button on the left side and the power button on the right side simultaneously. You just have to press them quickly, don’t hold them pressed; otherwise, you’ll activate other option suggestions, such as turning your iPhone down, Making an Emergency call, or checking your Medical ID.
- After giving both buttons a quick press, your screen will flash white, and you’ll hear a camera shutter sound. Your screen is now captured.
- Just like the previous models, you need to tap on the picture to proceed further. You now have a couple of options to choose from:
- Editing the image before sending it.
- Deleting it for whatever reason.
- Or just sending the screenshot as-is.
Did you know that you even can take a video of your screen?
In some cases, it’s even more helpful to take a video of your iPhone screen.
